An old-timer in my community made an interesting observation. “Scott,” he said as we reminisced, “it used to be that there were two restaurants here in Crothersville. Not only did the food taste different at Ted’s Restaurant than at Kern’s Grill, but they just felt different. Each was a reflection of the owner’s personality.”

I nodded in agreement. Ted’s was the spot where we always went after a ball game, took a date for a burger and fries, or simply hung out. Kern’s Grill was where the men of the community gathered for breakfast each morning in the late 1960s and 1970s.

During the lunch break at school, I sprinted there to join either Mom or Dad for a quick meal. (But never both at the same time. We owned the grocery store across the street, and one of my parents always had to stay to run our family business.)

For Ted Zollman, his restaurant was his stage, and we customers were his audience. His smile was as bright as his apron. His flashing blue eyes and natural charisma were as much a part of eating there as the cheeseburgers.

On the other hand, Ted’s local competitor, Alvie Kern, would sit in a booth or gruffly stand like a statue behind the counter, often with arms tightly crossed, seldom engaging in the ongoing conversation. He observed while his wife and daughter cared for the tables and customers. Kern’s Grill was a great place to grab a meal and go. Before you could exit the door, the white sack in which they had placed your order would display small and growing circles of grease. (It was a simpler time before we all knew our HDL and LDL numbers.)

Ted’s Restaurant, however, was where you would order a Cherry Coke, sit down, and relax, either because a friend was with you or because you knew that sooner or later, one was bound to come in and stay a while.

My old-timer friend continued, “Anymore, our fast food is the same as the fast food up the road. The McDonald’s in Seymour is the same as the McDonald’s in Scottsburg. They’re all the same from Portland, Oregon, to Portland, Maine. I guess consistency is a good thing, but haven’t we reached the point where we’ve gone overboard?

“The Walmart where we shop is the same as everywhere else . . . and that’s pretty much the same as Target or Meijer. And they all sell the same items anyway. How many places do you really need to be able to go buy your Tide detergent?”

He was on a roll: “My insurance agent sells the same stuff as yours, no matter what companies they work for. One has some screaming duck to represent it, and another has some caveman or lizard. I’m ‘in good hands’ in one place, another is ‘on my side,’ while another is ‘like a good neighbor.’ But the problem is, I can’t tell one from the next. I know the difference on my street between one of my neighbors and another. So how do I know why one company is a better neighbor or ‘on my side’ more than the other?”

These are great questions.

  • What happens when your business slows down?
  • What do you do when you find yourself in a downturn?

No one enjoys this situation – and often, the result is that we start marketing obsessively, creating an appearance of desperation for business. Ironically, no prospect or previous client is attracted to a company that seems to be hurting for customers.

Instead, we need to consider a more guided and reassured approach.

Within the professional speaking segment of my career — as opposed to the consulting and education/training aspects of what we do — I’ve noticed that spring often brings a bit of a slowdown in activity. A smaller number of conferences and conventions are held when school is not in session, and families are taking vacations, so we typically get fewer calls in the spring to book speeches for meetings in the summer months. (It’s why the National Speakers Association has always scheduled their annual convention in the summer!)

And 2024 is part of the four-year cycle of both a Presidential election here in the States and the Olympic games occurring in the same year. This often means that keynote slots usually filled by professional speakers will now go to political analysts and successful athletes.

  • Is there a typical time when you experience a lull in your business?

It’s tempting to view these quieter periods as detrimental. However, it’s crucial to recognize them for what they are: seasonal adjustments, part of a natural ebb and flow in the cycle of business.

Understanding the patterns of our professional landscape can transform how we perceive and react to these lulls. Instead of succumbing to frustration, we can view them as an opportunity to regroup and realign our strategies. Here are four approaches to re-motivating oneself during these slower periods:

In my whirlwind of a career as a professional speaker and author, constantly navigating through airports, speaking on stages across the globe, and engaging with diverse audiences, the concept of a prolonged pause seemed unfathomable to me. However, life, as it often does, has presented an unexpected twist. Following my recent rotator cuff surgery, I find myself in a unique situation: a mandatory six-week hiatus from my usual bustling schedule.

For the first time in my decades-long career, my calendar is blocked for recovery, a change that initially felt more confining than liberating. Yet, I’m beginning to reframe this period not as a setback but as an unanticipated opportunity for growth and reflection. This experience is teaching me the profound value of patience and the importance of embracing change, even when it arrives in the most unexpected forms.

The Power of Patience

Patience, often overlooked in the fast-paced world of business and speaking, will become a vital skill during my recovery. It’s not just about waiting for my shoulder to heal; it’s about understanding and respecting the natural process of recovery. Patience is teaching me to slow down, to appreciate the smaller, quieter moments, and to listen more attentively to my own needs and those around me. Being stationary has opened a treasure trove of time for study and planning. This period is allowing me to absorb new information, think deeply about future projects, and strategize how to integrate these learnings into my future presentations and writings. The stillness of recovery is proving to be a surprisingly fertile ground for intellectual growth and creativity.

Reflection is another unexpected gift of this period. It’s an opportunity to look back on my career to evaluate what has been successful and what can be improved. It’s a time to ponder over the feedback from past audiences and clients and to consider how their insights can shape my future work. Reflection is also deeply personal. It’s a time for me to assess my own journey, to recognize my strengths, and to identify areas for personal and professional development.

Perhaps the most significant lesson from this experience is to re-learn that challenges often present opportunities. This temporary pause is not just a break from work; it’s an opening to approach my career with renewed vigor and perspective. As I begin this path of recovery and discovery, I am reminded of the resilience and adaptability that define not just my career, but every achievement for us all. My mentor, Grady Nutt, introduced me to this idea through his chapter “ThanksLiving” in a book of verse. The essence of ThanksLiving is not just about expressing gratitude on special occasions but living a life steeped in thankfulness every day. 

Grady’s description of ThanksLiving as “an attitude that finds treasure in the plowed field of routine” resonates deeply — especially in current times.

We’re living in an era marked by significant challenges: political divisions, global pandemics, economic uncertainties, and social unrest. Amidst this turbulence, it’s easy to overlook the beauty of our daily routines, the quiet moments that bring us peace and stability. Yet, it’s in these routine aspects of life where we spend most of our time and where the seeds of gratitude can grow most abundantly.

In the United States, as we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, it’s customary to pause and reflect on our blessings. This tradition is more important than ever in our politically divided landscape. However, as Grady often reminded me, true gratitude extends beyond a single day. He encouraged me to slow down and savor life’s journey, emphasizing that the small moments often give the larger ones their meaning. This wisdom holds true in all aspects of life, particularly in times of loss and grief.

Warren Zevon, while battling cancer, poignantly advised David Letterman to “Enjoy every sandwich.” When my wife, Sheri, was dealing with the effects of terminal ovarian cancer, it was the quiet moments on our deck sipping coffee that brought more meaning to us than when we saw the Mona Lisa in the Louvre or strolled the beaches of Maui. This sentiment echoes in the lyrics of the hit song from my great friends, Diamond Rio, in “One More Day,” underscoring the importance of cherishing every moment.

These reflections remind us that every day, every experience, no matter how mundane, has inherent value and is worthy of our appreciation.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving this week, let’s do so with the spirit of ThanksLiving. Let’s make gratitude a daily practice, not just a yearly ritual. In challenging times, adopting a ThanksLiving mindset can be transformative. It encourages us to find joy and meaning in our everyday lives, to appreciate the small things that often go unnoticed, and to maintain a sense of hope and positivity despite the difficulties we may face.
